LITERATE LIVES

The Literate Lives program ensures more of our young people are strong readers, writers and thinkers. In Illinois, about half, or 52.4%, of students meet ACT standards in reading. But this is not the rate for all adolescents. For Black and Latino students, the percentage drops by  20 percent and 12 percent, respectively. We have to combat low literacy achievement from all angles, through the family, the school, and, most importantly, with young people.

Contact us for:

  • Workshops for parents and teens on  a variety of literacy topics

  • Assessment of adolescents' reading and writing strengths and needs

  • Professional development for educators- children spend most of their day in the classroom, so  building teachers' knowledge and skills for supporting older struggling readers is key

  • Consulting - we help non-profits and school districts design and implement strategies to raise literacy achievement

“My alma mater was books, a good library… I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.” — Malcolm X
